The Midnight Wash (Tart Cherry & Magnesium Mocktail Recipe)

Vibrant watercolor painting of a wine glass with a rich crimson berry mocktail, featuring soft pink splashes and minimalist ink outlines on textured paper.

The Midnight Wash

A slow, restorative evening drink ritual. Two ingredients, five minutes, and the permission to exhale.

There’s a particular kind of tired that doesn’t go away with Netflix or a glass of wine — it’s the kind that needs something slower. I started making The Midnight Wash on the nights when I needed to actually decompress, not just distract. Two ingredients, five minutes, and somehow it signals to my whole body that the day is done.

Tart cherry juice has a naturally deep, slightly tart flavor that feels more grown-up than sweet. Paired with a flavorless magnesium powder, it becomes something you genuinely look forward to — not because it’s a supplement, but because the ritual of making it is half the point. This is my version of a wind-down drink that doesn’t feel like a chore or a health task. It just feels good.

Why Tart Cherry & Magnesium

Tart cherry juice is different from the sweet cherry juice you grew up with. It has a depth to it — slightly sour, a little earthy, with a color so deep it looks almost like wine in the glass. It’s the kind of ingredient that makes a drink feel considered. You’re not just reaching for something sweet. You’re reaching for something with character.

The magnesium — I use Calm flavorless — dissolves into the water with a faint fizz and disappears completely. You’d never know it was there from the taste, but I notice the difference in how I feel later. No claims, no promises — just something I keep coming back to at the end of a long day.

As the house settles and the last lamp dims, this is the ritual I return to.
It’s slow, it’s simple, and it tastes like the permission to exhale.

What You’ll Need

Tart cherry juice, 100% unsweetened 4 oz
Magnesium glycinate powder (I use Calm flavorless) 1 packet or whatever serving suggestion is on the label
Still or sparkling water, cold 4–5 oz
Fresh lemon ¼ wedge
Raw honey or maple syrup (optional) ½ tsp
Ice, large cubes a few

Already had a long day? Here are the quick steps.

  1. Add ice to your glass.
  2. Pour a little cold water over the ice, stir in one packet of Calm flavorless until dissolved.
  3. Pour in 4 oz tart cherry juice slowly.
  4. Top with remaining water, squeeze in a little lemon.
  5. Add honey if you’d like a touch of sweetness. Stir gently and sip.

The Preparation

01

Set the scene

Choose your vessel with intention — a low, wide glass if you want to sip slowly, something tall if the evening calls for it. Settle two or three large ice cubes into the glass and let the quiet settle with them.

02

Dissolve the magnesium

Pour a small measure of cold water into the glass first — just enough to cover the ice. I use Calm flavorless — it dissolves cleanly without changing the taste. Stir it in slowly, watching it disappear. There’s a faint fizz, a brief cloudiness, and then clarity. Let it settle.

03

Pour the cherry

Now comes the moment. Pour the tart cherry juice in a slow, deliberate stream and watch the colors bleed into one another — deep garnet bleeding through pale water, blooming and dispersing. Don’t rush it. That gradient is the whole point.

04

Finish & adjust

Top with the remaining water, then squeeze the lemon wedge along the rim so the oils release first before the juice follows. If you want a touch of sweetness, stir in the honey now. Taste. Adjust. The balance should feel right to you.

05

Receive it

Move somewhere you won’t be interrupted. Hold the glass with both hands for a moment before drinking — feel the cold, notice the color. Then take the first sip slowly. This is the part you made it for.

Where to Find These

Nothing here requires a specialty store trip — most of these are already in your grocery run or a quick Amazon order away.

Tart Cherry Juice — Look for 100% unsweetened. Cheribundi and Dynamic Health are both reliable. Grocery stores usually carry it near the juice aisle.

Magnesium Powder — I use Natural Vitality Calm, flavorless version. It’s widely available and dissolves cleanly.

Raw Honey — Any good quality raw honey works. Manuka if you want to go all in, but a local raw honey is just as good.

Large Ice Cube Tray — Makes the whole drink feel more intentional. Worth having around.

Not every evening needs a grand gesture. Sometimes the ritual is small — a glass, a pour, a few minutes entirely your own. The Midnight Wash is yours to keep.
